In this post, we’ll provide you the links to download the macOS Sierra VMDK file for VirtualBox and VMware. In order to install macOS Sierra on a virtual machine like VMware or VirtualBox you’ll need either macOS Sierra ISO or VMDK files.
macOS Sierra
macOS Sierra, also known as version 10.12, is a big update for Apple’s operating system used on Mac computers. It’s the thirteenth major release and brings together the desktop and server operating systems under the name macOS, aligning it with other Apple operating systems like iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
Sierra gets its name from the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and Nevada. It introduces exciting new features like Continuity, which allows seamless integration between Mac and other Apple devices, and iCloud, which enables easy storage and access to files across multiple devices. There are also improvements in window management and support for convenient features like Apple Pay and Siri.
The development process began with the first beta version released to developers right after the 2016 WWDC keynote on June 13. A public-beta version followed on July 7, and on September 20, 2016, it became available to all users as a free upgrade through the Mac App Store. macOS Sierra was later succeeded by macOS High Sierra on September 25, 2017.
System requirements
To use macOS Sierra, you need to make sure your computer meets certain requirements. It needs to have at least 2 GB of RAM (the computer’s memory) and 8 GB of storage space (where you keep your files). macOS Sierra is designed to work on the following Apple products:
- iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid-2010 or newer)
- Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Mid-2010 or newer)
However, Sierra doesn’t support some older Macs released between mid-2007 and mid-2009. This was the first version of macOS since OS X Mountain Lion (released in 2012) to drop support for those Macs. Additionally, support for Xserve was also discontinued in Sierra.

What is a VMDK File?
A VMware Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) is a special type of file that stores the entire contents of a virtual machine. It’s like having a complete computer stored inside a single file. The VMDK format was originally created by VMware for their virtual appliances.
In a virtual environment, an operating system is installed on a virtual disk. This virtual disk acts just like a regular hard drive or solid-state drive (SSD) and allows the virtual machine to function properly. VMDK is one of the formats used to create these virtual disks.
VMDK files have a few advantages. They can be used to clone a physical drive and turn it into a virtual machine, and they also allow for offsite backups of virtual machines. Initially, VMDK files were only used with VMware products like VMware Workstation, VMware Player, and VMware Fusion. However, the format has now become open source and can be used by other virtualization platforms as well.
VMDK files can come in two types: dynamic (sparse) or fixed (flat or static). Fixed VMDKs are allocated a predetermined, large size to accommodate future growth as the virtual machine’s usage increases.
