Sometimes it becomes necessary to check Ram type and size in a Laptop or PC on Windows 10 before you change or add a new memory stick or buy a new system. So, in this guide, you’ll learn how to check the RAM type and size in a laptop or PC on Windows 10.
What is RAM
RAM is the acronym of Random Access Memory. As its name suggests, it is a type of computer memory that can be accessed at random. Its primary function is to store different kinds of information that are essential to running programs on your PC. It’s worth noting that RAM only stores data while the device is on. So, when you shut down your computer, the RAM will lose the information it had previously stored.
There are two main types of RAM — DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). Overall, the greater your RAM capacity, the faster your computer will be running. If your PC runs slowly, size can be one of the primary causes.

Types of RAM
Although all RAM basically serves the same purpose, there are a few different types commonly in use today:
- Static RAM (SRAM)
- Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
- Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
- Single Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDR SDRAM)
- Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (DDR SDRAM, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4)
- Graphics Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (GDDR SDRAM, GDDR2, GDDR3, GDDR4, GDDR5)
- Flash Memory
How to Check RAM Type & Size in a Laptop on Windows 10
Here, I will show you 2 best methods to find the RAM type on Laptop or PC on Windows 10.
Method 1. Check RAM Type & Size in a Laptop/PC Via Task Manager
The easiest to find the RAM type is using the Task Manager where you can find various information including CPU, RAM (Memory) such as RAM size and type, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, and other things.
Task Manager
The Task Manager is a feature of the operating system found in all Microsoft Windows versions since Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. It lets you show each of the computer’s tasks (processes) and overall output. You can monitor how much memory a program needs, interrupt a frozen program, and view available machine resources using the Task Manager.
Note: The Following steps mainly works for those who are using Windows 10 Pro Editions. It may not work well on Windows 10 Home Editions.
Step 1. Right-click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager or simply press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring the Taskbar in the easiest way.
Step 2. Click More details to expand the Task Manager.
Step 3. Click the Performance tab and select Memory on the left-pane menu. On the right side, you will see the RAM type and size next to the Memory. In my case, the RAM size is 4.0 GB and the RAM type is DDR3.
Method 2. Check RAM Type & Size in a Laptop/PC Using CPU-Z
If you can’t find the RAM type using the Task Manager or you’re using Windows 10 Home Editions then there are some third-party tools to let you check the type.
CPU-Z
CPU-Z is the most popular software on your computer and it provides all types of hardware information. You get RAM type, channel #, size, NB frequency, cycle time, and a lot more on a simple interface. The powerful hardware detection tool is based on a kernel-mode software driver that collects information in real-time. This app’s Qusere engine is really fast so you don’t have to wait any longer. And you can use this feature to search the RAM type on your Windows machine without hesitation.
Step 1. You can download CPU-Z from CPUID.com and follow the on-screen instructions to install.
Step 2. When installed, open the CPU-Z app, and if you’re prompted simply click Yes.
Step 3. Now, go to the Memory tab, and there you will see the RAM type and size.
Wrapping Up
This is how you can check RAM type in a laptop or PC on Windows 10. Using the Task Manager is the easiest way to know about the RAM type and size. However, if you’re facing difficulty finding the RAM type then you may prefer to download and install CPU-Z and it will provide various information regarding your installed hardware.
