What is an APK File?
APK is the short form for Android Package Kit and is the file format that Android uses to distribute and install apps. It contains all the elements that an app needs to install correctly on your device. Just like Windows (PC) systems use a .exe file for installing software, macOS (Mac) systems use .dmg while the APK does the same for Android.
But, you don’t see the actual APK file when downloading any app from Play Store. The Play Store will instead do the installation internally without giving you access to the APK file itself. Just like installing apps from the macOS app store or from the Windows Store on your PC. But, if you install apps from outside the Google Play Store, the APK file will be required.
