What is Dark Mode?
Dark Mode is a feature that allows MacBook users to switch to a completely different darker mode that transforms everything across the device. With Dark Mode on, the Calendar app will return to a black background and the style will be close to the color of the box, the Messages Bubbles will turn gray with white text, and the Finder background will be black as well.
Which Macs are supported?
If your machine can run macOS Mojave or later including macOS Catalina, Dark Mode is a built-in feature. These Mac computers are supported:
- MacBook models introduced in early 2015 or later
- MacBook Air models introduced in mid-2012 or later
- MacBook Pro models introduced in mid-2012 or later
- Mac mini models introduced in late 2012 or later
- iMac models introduced in late 2012 or later
- iMac Pro
- Mac Pro models introduced in 2013 or later
How to Get Dark Mode on MacBook ( macOS Catalina & Mojave)
Catalina and Mojave users may choose to switch Dark Mode on when they first install the operating system during the setup process. If you choose not to follow these steps, switch on Dark Mode:
Step 1. Open “System Preferences.” This can be accomplished by clicking on the “System Preferences” icon in the toolbar (it looks like a gray box with a gear inside) or by selecting the Apple icon in the top left corner and then clicking “System Preferences…”

Step 3. macOS Catalina includes three appearance options:
- Light Uses light appearance.
- Dark Activates Dark Mode.
- Auto Activates light mode during the day and Dark Mode at night. Note that the “Auto” selection is only available for macOS Catalina.
