OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is a major update for Apple’s macOS, the operating system used on Macintosh computers. It was released on July 25, 2012, and was available for purchase and download through Apple’s Mac App Store. This release marked a change in Apple’s strategy, as they decided to release new versions of OS X online every year, instead of every two years.
Mountain Lion was named to show that it built upon the previous version called Lion. Apple’s main goals in developing this update were to make it easier for users to manage and synchronize content between different Apple devices and to make the operating system more user-friendly.
Some of the new features included a system called Gatekeeper, which protected against malware, as well as integration with Apple’s Game Center and iCloud services. The Safari web browser was also updated to version 6. Other improvements involved turning Notes and Reminders into separate applications, distinct from Mail and Calendars. Additionally, the iChat application was replaced with a version of iOS’s Messages, and a Notification Center, similar to the one on iOS devices, was added to group updates from various applications in one place.
The operating system also allowed users to quickly share content on Twitter through integrated links. Initially, Apple had plans to integrate Facebook as well, but that feature was not ready at the time of the release and was made available as a downloadable update later on.
