How to Reduce Image Size on Mac with Preview App

Aspect ratios aren’t the only problem though. If we want to share the picture through an email, use it on social media or use it in a presentation, it has to be small enough in the file. If you need to reduce the size of an image or images because it’s too large to send, to use it online, or for some other reasons, you may think you need a pricey software like Photoshop, but you can easily resize images on a Mac using Preview app, which comes with macOS free. You can also choose to edit the size of multiple images on your Mac at once.

Reduce an Image Size on Mac using the Preview App

Step 1. Double-click on your image to open it with Preview, if it’s your default image viewer. You can also right-click on the image and select Open With > Preview.

Step 2. Go to Tools and select Adjust Size.

Step 3. In the window that appears, make sure that the drop-down menu next to the image Width and Height is in pixels.

Step 4. Now, go to the Fit into the drop-down menu and select an image size that is less than the current height and width of the image.

Step 5. You can also adjust the Width, Height, and Resolution accordingly.

Step 6. Note what happens in the boxed area at the bottom under Resulting Size – the size of the image will change, as you can see in the screenshot below, where the actual image size was 7.7 MB and now it’s 1.4 MB. It means the image size has been reduced by 47.3 percent.

Step 7. Once you’ve made those changes, make sure you’ve checked the box next to Scale proportionally; otherwise, you risk an image that is out of proportion and may not look very professional. At last click OK.

Step 8. To save these new dimensions, click on File in the top toolbar, and then Save.
