If you’re looking for a more interactive way to power off your or restart your PC, use this guide to add Slide to shut down and restart button to touch and non-touchscreen devices on Windows 11.
Meanwhile, in Windows 10 and Windows 11, there are a variety of options for shutting down or restarting your computer, but most of them involve multiple mouse clicks, which may be time-consuming. You can rapidly shut down or restart your computer by double-clicking on the shortcut icon if you create a desktop shortcut for shutdown or restart. That would save you both time and hassle.
How to Add Restart and Slide to Shut Down in Windows 11
So without wasting any time here are the steps to create and add restart and slide to shut down button in Windows 11:
1: Create SlideToShutDown Shortcut in Windows 11
Shutting down and restarting your computer are two of the most basic operations available in Windows 10. With the “Slide to shut down your PC” gesture in Windows 8, Microsoft included a new interactive way to turn off your device. That function is included in Windows 10, but it is generally only available when you press and hold the power button on tablets and Windows 10 Mobile devices.
You can simply build a shortcut with the correct command to activate “Slide to shut down your PC” on Windows 11 if you want to have the same shutdown experience on your laptop or desktop.
Step 1. Right-click on the desktop then select New > Shortcut.
Step 2. Type SlideToShutDown
and click Next.
Step 3. Enter the shortcut name for the button(e.g., SlideToShutDown). Click Finish.
Step 4. Right-click the newly created shortcut and click on Properties.
Step 5. On the Shortcut tab, click the Change Icon button.
Step 6. Choose the best icon to represent the shutdown button. Click OK.
Step 7. Click Apply and OK again to complete the task.
After you’ve finished the instructions, you’ll have a shortcut that, when double-clicked, launches Slide to shut down your computer. Then just touch or click and drag your mouse to the bottom of the screen to turn your device off.
Additionally, you can right-click the shortcut and select “Pin to taskbar” for faster access to the shutdown experience using touch or mouse.
2: Create a Restart Button Windows 11
- Right-click on the desktop then select New > Shortcut.
- Type
shutdown.exe -r -t 00
and click Next.
- Enter the shortcut name for the button(e.g., Restart). Click Finish.
- Right-click the newly created shortcut and click on Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, click the Change Icon button.
- Choose the best icon to represent the Restart button. Click OK.
- Click Apply and OK again to complete the task.
Then, as seen in the image below, a restart shortcut is created on the Windows 11 desktop. When you double-click the shortcut, a Restart box appears, and Windows 11 restarts quickly.
That’s it. These were the steps to create and add restart and slide to shut down button in Windows PC or laptop.

It’d be great to be able to DISABLE this stupid “slide to shutdown” feature. If I have already selected “Shutdown” from the start menu, that means I want to shutdown. I don’t need the computer to then offer me the option to slide to shutdown.
